A plain painted curb number helps people find your house in daylight. The reflective version is about the other twelve hours — and the case for it comes less from paint companies than from the people who drive fire engines at 3 a.m.
Here's the honest version of that case, including what reflective paint genuinely can't do.
The problem: houses that can't be found at night
Fire officials are unusually candid about this. The McKinney Fire Department's address visibility page states: “When we respond to an emergency and are unable to locate an address, time spent verifying the location may mean the difference between life and death.” It's why the fire code in every city we serve requires contrasting, street-legible numbers on the house — the code's own rationale is that crews shouldn't lose time hunting for an address.
And crews do lose time. In one news account from Maine, a fire chief described responders driving past a residence “at least twice” on emergency calls and hunting for numbers with a flashlight out the window; a local ambulance official estimated only about one address in three in her county had highly visible numbers. There's nothing special about Maine — dark streets, brass numerals, and overgrown shrubs are universal.
What your fire department recommends
McKinney's fire department doesn't stop at diagnosing the problem. Its published recommendations include contrasting numbers at least four inches tall near your front entrance, trimming any landscaping that blocks them — and, in as many words: “Paint four-inch letters on the curbing in front of your home.” The logic is simple: the curb faces the street, sits at headlight height, and never has a car-length hedge growing in front of it. How reflective paint actually works
The reflective part isn't the paint — it's thousands of tiny glass spheres embedded in it while it's wet. The Federal Highway Administration, which maintains the engineering literature because this is the same technology as highway lane striping, describes the mechanism: light from a headlight enters each bead, bends, bounces off the pigment behind the bead, and is returned in a tight cone back toward the light source. That's retroreflection — the marking sends a car's own headlights back at the driver, which is why lane lines seem to light up at night while the asphalt around them stays dark.
The honest limitation follows from the physics: retroreflective numbers shine when a light source points at them — headlights turning onto your street, a spotlight from a fire engine, a delivery driver's flashlight. They don't glow on their own, and they won't leap out for a pedestrian walking by without a light. What they do, they do in exactly the moment that matters: when someone is driving slowly down a dark street looking for an address.
How long it lasts in Texas sun
Two honest data points. First, the Texas Department of Transportation's pavement marking handbook rates ordinary traffic paint's service life at roughly 6 to 24 months — on roads, under constant tire wear. A curb face takes essentially no tire abrasion, so curb numbers outlive lane stripes; industry practice puts a well-prepped curb number at one to three years of sharp legibility in full sun, longer in shade.
Second, a detail from the highway research worth knowing: retroreflectivity fades faster than the paint itself, because the surface beads gradually wear and dislodge. A curb number can look fine in daylight while having lost much of its nighttime shine — which is the real reason to refresh every few years, not just cosmetics.
Our take
Reflective numbers are one of the cheapest safety upgrades a house can get: the professional services across Texas include reflective beads in a $30-something base price (see what curb painting costs), so you're rarely paying a meaningful premium for the reflectivity itself. For guests and pizza drivers it's a convenience. For an ambulance crew reading curb after dark at speed, it's the difference between your house and a guess.
